Joe Baione

Artist Bio

The youngest of three musical sons from musical parents, Joe Baione entered the University of Maryland on a jazz scholarship in 1989. He had a vision to teach future musicians while developing his own performance career and he graduated in 1995 with a bachelor of arts in music education with a minor in jazz performance.

By day, Baione is an energetic and highly creative band teacher who has taken several struggling beginner band programs and developed them to a size and ability that he never expected. By night, he is Joe Baione, jazz vibist. Baione started playing drums with the Len Gray Big Band, but his true love was the vibes and he soon co-founded the Jazz Express Quartet.

In 2003 Joe brought NEA Jazz Master Benny Golson to Delaware for a clinic for Lake Forest School District jazz students and for a free community concert featuring Benny Golson with Jazz Express. Golson became a mentor and continues to return to Delaware to work with Lake Forest students and perform with Baione's band.

Baione's performance career continues to evolve. He has performed at The Lincoln Center in NYC, The Air Jamaica Jazz and Blues Festival in Montego Bay, The Cape May Jazz Festival, Rehoboth Autumn Jazz Festtival Sydney's Blues and Jazz Restaurant, the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival, The Kimmel Center and Zanzibar Blue. He recorded his debut CD under MF Productions in NYC featuring his sextet and his original works "Superhero", "Hot Mama" and "Remembering Reland."

Baione was Teacher of the Year for Central Elementary in Lake Forest School District in 2002. He was named "Emerging Jazz Artist 2005" by Philadelphia Weekly and performed at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola @ Lincoln Center after being chosen as a "Rising Star of Tomorrow. Baione is the Co-Producer/Artistic Director for the 1st Annual Central DE Jazz and Blues Festival which will be held in May 2007.

Baione is clearly one of the top jazz artist in the region but also establishing himself nationally and internationally.

Description of Residency Activities

Joe Baione brings 12 years of teaching experience and 15 years as a jazz performer together in developing a successful foundation for young musicians. Over the past four years, Baione has brought a jazz legend to perform a clinic and concert for his students and the community, with support from an MBNA Grant. The grant was named "Top 10 Excellence in Education" grants written in the past few years.

Baione has conducted clinics and brought his local and NYC Sextet to schools, working with young musicians to give them an "experience of a lifetime." He has been asked by Jupiter/Ross Musical Instrument to begin conducting clinics on "So You Want to Improvise" at MENC conferences around the country. This clinic is a sequential journey from elementary to high school in the steps it takes and his philosophy of learning to improvise jazz.
