Roger Matsumoto

Artist Bio

Roger Matsumoto is a photographer who works with hand coated prints. He uses some of the oldest photographic processes to create modern interpretations of still lifes and landscapes. His primary process is the palladium print, which uses an 8x10-inch negative taken with an 8x10 camera. For landscapes, he also uses the salted paper process, which uses negatives enlarged from smaller cameras. To create the final artwork, watercolor paper is coated with a solution containing a light-sensitive compound such as silver or iron. The paper and negative are exposed to ultraviolet light, then processed.

"One of the advantages of hand-coated printing is that one is not limited to commercially available products," explains Matsumoto. "The world of photographic printing has always been in a state of flux where the continued supply of a certain product is never certain. This is even more so during this time as digital effects are supplanting the so-called traditional silver-based products."

Matsumoto has exhibited in more than 120 shows over the past 20 years, including eight one-person shows. One of his works is in the permanent collection of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
